So Dark Yet So Beautiful
By Teh_N_Mochi
The beautiful artwork that went into the production of "In These Words Vol.1" truly took my breath away. I must have spent at least 10 minutes admiring the 5 gorgeous double-page spreads of the color insets at the beginning of the book before being able to tear myself away to read the story. The crime story did not disappoint either.
In this volume 1, we meet Katsuya, an attractive psychiatrist who is about to meet face to face with a serial killer whom he had helped the Tokyo Police Department capture. The princely looking Keiji is suspected of committing 12 murders in the space of three years and during custody hearing, promises to give his full confession to Katsuya only. However, what should have been a simple collective bargaining seemed to literally turn into a nightmare for Katsuya. Every night, he seemed to be plagued with the lurid dreams of undergoing pains and pleasures under Keiji's tortures. Can Katsuya figure out how to remedy this awful situation before the stress affect his work and his life?
I love what I read in this EOL manga so far. The premise of the story is very interesting and I think the author did a very good job at creating suspense. However, I do think the pace of the story telling is a tad too slow. I truly love the art but I feel there are quite a few redundant art panels in the book when one realizes that a picture should be worth a thousand words. I also feel that the dialogues between Katsuya and Keiji could have been made longer to encompass more characters' background materials but crisp to build up the dark and sensual tensions between the two. Currently, I am left with making a lot of assumptions on my own about these two very interesting characters
I am very intrigued by the cliff hanger ending and would love to find out the rest of the stories in subsequent volumes. However, please don't make your newfound fan like me wait two years for the next release. I don't think I can stand such suspense.

Dark & twisted, and not for everyone
By Jmaynard
From the synopsis, I expected this to be a dark story: a serial killer is willing to talk, but only to the police psychiatrist who helped orchestrate his capture. What I didn't expect was the violent sexual imagery (since it's listed as yaoi, I had anticipated Asano having a lover & romance outside the case). The book opens with a prose prologue, which is unusual in manga/yaoi. However, it was an excellent tool to give the reader background to set the stage. Soon after he agrees to interview the killer, Asano begins having horrific nightmares of being violently raped by him. And the first such nightmare immediately follows the prologue, in explicit detail. Thereafter, the story shifts between the actual interviews and Asano's nightmares - all violent, vivid and extremely graphic.
I would not classify this as yaoi because it is not a love story; not even a so-called rape fantasy. I think this manga would be better classified as horror. Though they are nightmares (and not "really" happening), the sexual situations are disturbing, and involve bloodshed. This manga is not for the faint of heart. However, the graphic rapes do fit the serial killer storyline. I gave this five stars, not as a yaoi romance, but as a horror novel. Though the ending was predictable, I am still interested in reading volume 2. Especially considering this closes on a cliffhanger. Overall, recommended to those looking for a dark, edgy manga, but those expecting romantic yaoi should consider themselves warned.
Note: though this is unavailable on Amazon as of this writing, it's still available at retail elsewhere.

Beautiful, Unique Manga
By Jessica
I have read many yaoi mangas since I was old enough to appreciate this genre of manga and I must say I have yet to read one that is quite like this one. The story line is so unique. This is definitely not your average boy's love story. It's dark and violent and the two main characters seem like such opposites (a psychiatrist (Katsuya) who developed a criminal profile which led to a serial murder's (Shinohara) arrest)that you wonder how their relationship is going to develop. The plot is chilling as it revolves mainly around these two men in a sparse room in an isolated house with minimal external contact, the psychiatrist chosen by the murderer to be the sole recipient of his confession. The story alternates between these interviews, Katsuya's haunted nights in his temporary "hotel-like" room, and sexual interactions between Katsuya and Shinohara, in which Shinohara repeatedly torments and rapes Katsuya while telling him how much he loves him. The artwork in the manga is outstanding; each panel shows the mangakas' dedication to creating beautiful drawings and detailed scenes. Katsuya is gorgeous and Shinohara has this eerie, sinister charisma about him that makes him attractive and intriguing despite what he's done. Again, the story line is unique and this volume ends with a cliff-hanger that makes me eager and impatient for the next volume to come out (hopefully there will be a volume 2!). The only warning I have is that this manga is not for someone who absolutely detests rape/bondage/violent sex scenes or for people who like fluffy, love-at-first-sight yaoi plots. But I definitely reccommend this to anyone who likes beautiful artwork, intriguing storylines, and a very untypical yaoi plot.
