I love buying used books. This one was in excellent condition and I saved a ton of money. As for the book itself, I am keeping this one. I usually recycle my school books when I am done with the class, but not this one. I can see myself referencing this book again. I think the thing I like best about it is that it is very clear and not overly complicated like many texts can be.

Good tips but nothing new that hasn’t been discussed by other self-help books

Be positive, change your attitude, utilize efficiency methods, exercise and live life! If you’re a self help junkie there isn’t much in this book that is new or revolutionary. It does, however, lay out a solid plan and a free pdf is provided to readers and listeners to get them to act right away to better him or herself. The author prescribes a task for each day that needs to be completed that day. For the 90 days there are 90 different tasks. For example, on day one the author recommends changing your negative attitude into a positive one. Day two, he says no one can make you happy so it’s up to you to make your self happy. These are all good tips but I feel as though the book is not substantial enough to be worth the $10 price tag especially when a quarter of the book is famous quotes. That is why I have given it four stars.

I listened to the audible version and did not enjoy the voice of the reader and he was talking really slowly, but that’s just me being very nit picky.

I like to consider myself fairly advanced at NLHE. But I kept coming back to the same weakness in my game; the math. I've never been big on math in poker, even though I recognize it's incredibly important. Most of it stems from my weakness at all aspects of math, but also because I could never find a book that clearly explained it to me without becoming overwhelming. When it comes to math I need something simple and also something that grabs and keeps my attention. This book did just that. You get plenty of examples to practice, and even charts and "cheat sheets" to make it even easier. Whether you're an advanced player or a beginner at NLHE I believe this is a book you need to have in your poker library.

Many valuable concepts

It's a quick and easy read lots of solid concepts explained. I liked how it gave you two ways to calculate pot odds: the ratio method and the percentage method. I was only familiar with the ratio method before reading this. My only issue with the book is there are a number of typos. Not necessarily misspellings but using the word "two" when it should have been "to" and other similar scenarios. Just little things like that. Not a big deal but it does make me question how closely some of the material was checked. Either way for such a great price there's no excuse not to read it if you're into playing poker.

Great book. I hope nobody buys this book cause I will have a great advantage over them. The author is well organized. There are great courses in the book. Probability, odds, ratios, risk reward issues, calls, bets, bluffs math issues are tough. This book deals with poker math like nobody else. It is a must to have if you play poker. ARE YOU TIRED OF PEOPLE IGNORING YOU???!?!?!

Great book with insightful guides that will assist you in any conversation. Have you ever wondered why people don't understand your point, or take offense at your words? These authors break down the subtle, hidden meanings of words and phrases that we take for granted. We often have a thought in our own minds and assume that everyone else will understand our intent. However, WORDS MATTER!!! This small, and very readable book sheds light on how to get the most out of your words, and how to ensure that you are sending the message you intend. It also gives you ideas for determining whether information you are reading is missing relevant and important facts that would make it more clear, or more balanced. This prevents you from believing everything you read, and helps you to become a more critical reader.

Not Impressed

I purchased this book because it was a required text for school, but I haven't been especially impressed. There is some good content here, but I think the writing style falls short of connecting with the most appropriate target audience, and it contains a number of logical flaws -- a pretty serious problem in a book about reasoning.

From the start, the authors begin with the assumption that the reader will CARE about applying critical thinking to his life. This is probably a safe assumption for a book that is picked up off the shelf by the average reader, it may or may not be a reasonable assumption for a book that is used primarily as a required text. (They do give a nod to this discrepancy about halfway through the book, but it would have been more effective, in my opinion, to have solidly argued the benefits of critical thinking in the very beginning.)

I tend to think pretty critically by nature, and I still found much of this book hard to follow. The examples use a weird "stream of consciousness" style to show the expected thought processes, rather than simply showing the argument as it's presented and the elements of the argument properly broken down. This whole approach, as well as the general presentation style in many of the sections, imparts a sort of "fuzziness" to the whole thing -- at least for me -- that stands in stark contrast to well-defined logic/critical thought.

Worse still, the authors' own logic fails at a number of points. I didn't make note of all the instances as I went along. Most were fairly minor. But the very first example given in the section about identifying logical fallacies incorporates an egregious fallacy. A passage is presented, and the conclusion and two reasons are then broken out in the authors' own words. However, the authors commit a "straw man" fallacy (arguing against an argument DIFFERENT from that which the original author made), by rewording the original passage to state a " reason" that is other than what the original said. As a result, their evaluation of the argument is to throw it out as fallacious on the basis of a descriptive assumption that directly contradicts what the actual argument WAS.

Errors like these are unfortunate in any academic text; they're unforgivable in a text whose entire purpose is the teaching of critical thinking.

It doesn't get any better, either. Nearly every example of a fallacy is questionable, at best (a real shame, since there are plenty of highly-relevant examples available). This whole section makes me feel like the authors are merely trying to influence me to adopt their political/ideological worldview, because they consistently misrepresent the written arguments and, as a result, discount arguments on faulty bases. Many of the arguments DO contain faulty -- or at least WEAK -- reasoning, but it's not the legitimate weaknesses that are addressed, in most instances.

I left my heart at 84 Charing Cross Road

A MUST READ FOR YOUNG WRITERS. Reading this book is one of the best things I have ever done for myself. As a writer and an avid reader, Helene Hanff's quick wit and dry sense of humor was not only a lesson on how to keep your reader interested; it is a real writer's block ice-breaker for me!
The correspondence between Helene Hanff and the staff at the 84 Charing Cross Road book store are short and to the point letters about particular books, but the relationship that develops between characters is heartfelt and you can very easily put yourself in her shoes. I found myself spellbound. I read it in one afternoon.
Treat yourself to a wonderful easy read. A good book to follow up with after this is "Apple of My Eye" also by Helene Hanff. Even if you have never been to New York City before she will take you there.
I give both books 5 stars and can't wait to read the rest of her books!

I love, love, love this charming book that reaches out and touches the bibliophile in me! Only one who has a life-long love affair with books will truly appreciate this story of the decades' long correspondence between Helene Hanff, a script reader/ writer living in New York, and Frank Doel, the manager of an antiquarian British bookshop, Marks & Co. The correspondence starts in the year 1949 and ends in 1968.

These letters reveal two people who shared a similar sense of humor and a passion for old books. Ms. Hanff had a particular fondness for antiquarian books filled with wisdom - the works of John Donne, Samuel Pepys, Newman, Leigh Hunt, Walter Savage Landor, and many others. Despite making little money, Hanff develops such a fondness for the people running the bookshop that she sends them food parcels when she discovers England is being subjected to food rationing in the post-war period.

My love for this story is not only because it is about a love of books, but also because it harkens back to a time when people actually took pains to correspond with each other (not that they had a choice), an art that is slowly dying out (I try my best to keep it alive by penning long letters to my parents who live on a different continent and who are blissfully oblivious to the wonders of e-mailing and social networking).

84, Charing Cross Road resonates with me on so many levels, and is the perfect read on days when I'd like to just slow down and savor the pleasure of curling up with a light read. The movie adaptation starring Anne Bancroft and Sir Anthony Hopkins is another delight that perfectly captures the essence of the book. Also recommended:
