Review
“[Author Claudia Kalb] fruitfully employs diverse sources, including psychology studies and published biographies, to tell the undeniably fascinating stories of her subjects. This is an informative compilation and it’s certain to provide readers with fascinating stories to share about an array of famous names.”—Publishers Weekly

"Kalb’s well-written exercise in applying modern psychiatric theory to historical figures, from Marilyn Monroe to Albert Einstein to Charles Darwin, certainly makes for some very entertaining armchair speculation." —Booklist, starred review

"With keen insight and a writerly flair, Claudia Kalb, one of the nations’s pre-eminent science journalists, has written a book that is at once profound and a great deal of fun. She takes us on an engrossing and original journey into the minds (and, yes, the madnesses) of some of history's most intriguing figures. Kalb explores nothing less than the mysteries of genius and of individuality."  —Jon Meacham, Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of American Lion

“A brilliant and fascinating journey into the perils that so often accompany genius. Spell-binding.”  —Edward Hallowell, M.D., co-author of Driven to Distraction

“With a sharp eye but forgiving, deep-seated sense of humanity, Claudia Kalb takes us into the netherworld where emotions make (and break) extraordinary figures from Marilyn Monroe to Albert Einstein. Compelling, intriguing, surprising and fun.”  —Evan Thomas, author of Richard Nixon: A Man Divided

“Claudia Kalb uses insights about the great men and women of history to animate today’s most gripping mental health headlines … A wonderful book.”  —Robin Marantz Henig, New York Times Magazine contributing writer and President, National Association of Science Writers

“Ms. Kalb…gently reframes the narratives of seemingly familiar but quirky celebrities and raises important questions to popular attitudes towards mental health.”-Forbes.com

“Claudia Kalb provides compelling insight into the fine line between mental illness and greatness and creativity that plagued some of history’s most celebrated icons.” –Caroline Howe for Dailymail.com

“While not a business book per se, her [Kalb’s] work does have relevance as more people are becoming aware of mental illness as a workplace issue.”-Harvard Business Review

“…mixing celebrity stories with a psychological analysis of their personalities… I found this to be a great read.” –Celebrity Books

“Kalb doesn’t just look at the possible positive effect of mental illness on creativity... She also examines the ways psychological disturbances can tragically cut short creative endeavors.”-BookPage

Fascinating glimpse into the mental health of notable personalities
By Phillip O.
This is a fascinating glimpse into the minds and disorders of a dozen notable personalities. Each chapter provides a concise biography of the subject, focusing on a unique personality trait that defined them. The chapters also delve into the background of the particular maladies and how they have been treated throughout history. Well written and fun to read, the book will peak interest in reading more about the individuals. I found some chapters more interesting than others but it depends on how much you have read about the particular person. I found the Marilyn Monroe chapter mundane but I had heard all of the information before. I found the chapters on people that I was not that familiar with (Christine Jorgenson, George Gershwin) to be more fascinating.

The subjects and their conditions include:

Marilyn Monroe (borderline personality disorder)
Howard Hughes (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
Andy Warhol (hoarding)
Princess Diana (bulimia)
Abraham Lincoln (depression)
Christine Jorgenson (transgender)
Frank Lloyd Wright (narcissism)
Betty Ford (alcoholism/drug addiction)
Charles Darwin (anxiety)
George Gershwin (hyperactivity)
Fyodor Dostoevsky (gambling addiction)
Albert Einstein (Asperger's syndrome)

No One is Perfect....Not Even Our Heroes!
By Wandrwoman
In this well researched and well written book, Claudia Kalb investigates the behavior, personality, and accomplishments of 12 famous people and identifies what was very likely to have been a manifestation of mental disorder. In this psychiatric “tell all” we learn details about the personage’s life, their personality, and the challenges faced. We also learn how, in spite of these challenges, they were able to succeed.

We learn how the perception of mental disorders have changed over time, and how the medical community has evolved in the definition of psychological disorders, their identification, and their treatment.

Some of the personalities, Betty Ford, Princess Diana, and Christine Jorgensen, lived in the 20th century and had the benefit of psychological testing and treatment and all three were outspoken about their problems during their lifetime. Betty Ford with substance addiction and abuse, Princess Diana with bulimia, and Christine Jorgensen with what was then considered gender dysphoria and is now the hotly debated, and very current subject of gender identity.

Other personalities were dysfunctional but on the basis of their wealth and position, lived peculiar, often destructive lives until their deaths. Andy Warhol’s townhouse was so filled with boxes and stuff that he was reduced to living in only one room….his bedroom. This extreme hoarding was publicly discovered when he died unexpectedly after a gall bladder operation. Howard Hughes suffered from OCD and a pathological fear of germs and disease. His extremely wealth allowed him to surround himself with employees who indulged his fears and helped maintain his bizarre behavior. Frank Lloyd was a narcissist who saw himself at the center of the universe. Always right, always perfect, his buildings leaked and were structurally unsound. He cared little for the needs of those who commissioned him….or for his family.

To me, most interesting were those who were successful because of, rather than in spite of, their mental peculiarities and disorders. Abraham Lincoln suffered from states of depression that allowed him to perceive the disastrous realities of a nation at war far more perceptively than, say, a gung-ho optimist. Albert Einstein was very likely somewhere on the Asperger’s spectrum. Socially inept, he was a genius capable of focusing on the most advanced and complicated problems of theoretical physics. George Gershwin was a restless, inattentive, “wild boy” that couldn’t sit still or take instruction….until he discovered the piano. A bundle of nervous energy his entire life, Gershwin composed “Rhapsody in Blue” in only 3 weeks. Would he have been so accomplished if he had been diagnosed with ADHD when a child and treated with Adderall?

This intriguing combination of celebrity, accomplishment, psychology, and history is absorbing and always interesting.

WHY GREAT MINDS DON'T THINK ALIKE
By Michael P. Naughton
"If my devils are to leave me, I am afraid my angels will take flight as well." - Rainer Maria Rilke

Yes, this is a book about a dozen disorders of history's acclaimed and notable personalities which include Lincoln, Monroe, Darwin, Warhol et al. But this is also a book about achievements and seeds of greatness in a troubled garden of fascinating personalities.

Andy Warhol Was a Hoarder examines these troubled minds in an edifying and engaging voice for readers interested in psychology profiles and disorders. Author Claudia Kalb has culled and corroborated facts from published medical reports, biographies, autobiographies, letters and even available diaries. But here is the interesting thing, the personalities she chose are not random, but rather connected in creative ways. She mentions in her introduction that "Ultimately, this book is about crossways and connections..."

If you know someone that suffers from a particular disorder, then Kalb's book may help to destigmatize the disorder. You will find optimism between the pages. As Joseph Campbell once said, "The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are." Each of us is unique in our idiosyncrasies, foibles and character defects and being "normal," which is open to interpretation, is somewhat overrated (there is a great article in Psychology Today by David Bedrick, J.D., Dipl. PW on "Why Being Normal Isn't Always Healthy").

Look at the most recent example of Michael Burry depicted in the movie "The Big Short." Burry's son was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, which Burry thinks he may too suffer a mild form of the autism-related condition. But like Einstein, Michael Burry had an extraordinary focus, and Burry had the counterintelligence to buy credit default swaps before the bubble burst.

Years ago when I read "Darkness Visible" by William Styron, I learned Styron, like Hemingway, suffered from depression, yet both were incredibly gifted writers and success was not the cure. Van Gogh suffered from depression (and aura of migraines -- I also suffer from this form of migraines). John Forbes Nash Jr. in "A Beautiful Mind" suffered from schizophrenia. Why is it that so many creative types in entertainment suffer from depression and tend to medicate themselves through substance abuse, most recently Scott Weiland -- It is well known that Jim Morrison had a high IQ but his destructive tendencies and alcoholism cut his life short. Great Poets: Plath, Pound, Poe, Kerouac, Dickenson all battled depression, however notice the brilliance of their poetry.

In the final analysis, there is a gift in all this if the individual learns to creatively channel their "chaos of delight," (Darwin referring to the mind). Nietzsche also once said, "One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star."

Dance on...

You will find yourself seeking out more than the dozen "beautiful minds" included in this book. I think Claudia Kalb could easily turn this book into an ongoing series.

Kaler examines how "modern" contraceptive technologies, such as the pill and the Deop-Provera injection, were embroiled in gender and generation conflicts, and in the national liberation struggle, in Zimbabwe during the 1960s and 1970s. Based on extensive oral and archival research, the book shows the ways in which fertility and control over reproduction within marriage and the family influenced the development of the "imagined community" of the nascent Zimbabwean nation.

Family planning with a racist tinge
By W Boudville
Modern contraception is normally associated with an increase in women's freedom. Sexually, it put women on a par with men. But in Rhodesia, before majority rule in 1980, contraception triggered quite a different response amonst some of the Africans. Contraception, and indeed the entire rubric of family planning "was mass murder and genocide, a demographic attack on the African population", in one common view.
Talk about cognitive dissonance! How could something generally looked upon favourably elsewhere take on this meaning? In much of her book, Kaler explains. The minority white government employed family planning workers, to separately serve whites and blacks. The workers themselves sincerely tried to help their clientele. But in the government, there was a vocal element urging family planning to be applied to blacks, to reduce their fertility vis-a-vis the whites. Needless to say, such urgings leaked out to the blacks, and were in turn used by revolutionaries as agitprop against Ian Smith's regime.

Rich with data; somewhat skewed
By Lindsay Briggs
Running After Pills: Politics, Gender, and Contraception in Colonial Zimbabwe written by Amy Kaler is a very good read that gives an good snapshot of family planning during white majority rule in Zimbabwe from the mid 50's to the early 80's. Kaler uses interviews and verbatim text to present different sides to a very complicated issue. The majority of the material in the book comes from archival materials (e.g. speech transcripts, newspaper articles) and from qualitative interviews with family planning workers and "common" people that had experience with family planning during the time period. In my opinion the interviews are the strongest portions of the book, although she did have a tendency to be a bit redundant in her attempt to provide the reader with substantial proof that the interviewees were expressing concerns felt by a wide range of people. Using direct quotes from her subjects allowed the participants to have their voices very clearly heard throughout the book.

I found the most intriguing idea from the book is the idea that women's bodies became a hot spot of political and social discussion. Kaler does a good job in explaining the many groups that had some claim of interest or authority over a woman's decision of what to do with her body. The introduction starts out strongly presenting a clear case about how fertility control is much more than whether or not a woman has a baby, and the many layers of interest that are affected by a single decision. She develops a very articulate argument during the discussion on Shona marriages (Chapter 5) the many competing factions and factors that helped to reinforce the idea that women were not and should not be the only ones in control of the decision of whether or not to use contraceptives.

This discussion also emphasizes the second most interesting point in the book, that of presenting black Zimbabwean women against the typical view of a weak, uneducated African woman with little to no power. Indeed Kaler provides a strong case that black Zimbabwean women were actively engaged in finding ways to subvert all of the forces that were trying to exert control over their bodies and engaging in family planning without others' knowledge. Her interviews show the many ways and rationale that women were able to move past the limits that their place in society seemingly cast them. This is a powerful point as it presents a contradictory case against the majority discourse that likes to cast African women as weak and helpless women that need to be saved by outside forces.

Lastly one of the other most fascinating points in the book is the discussion around indigenous beliefs around biomedicine and physical biology of humans. This portion of the book imparts insightful knowledge that can be very important to researchers from all fields in understanding the ways that Western concepts are seen in other cultures. Often biology is not the only or most important factor, but the additional layer of social context in which these processes are understood are equally or even more significant.

My major criticism is that I thought Kaler presented a heavily skewed view against the side of all white Zimbabweans; she only once seems to entertain the notion that maybe the guerrillas were not 100% positive in their struggle but does not spend a lot of time on it. From a historical perspective, and possibly because she did much of the research and writing in the 90's and published it in early 2000's she did not have to opportunity to see some of the public discourse around the political situation that is now being discussed about Zimbabwe and Mugabe. Obviously there were many injustices that went on during white rule in Zimbabwe, and there is much to be said about the many motives of the white regime including racist plans at political domination. So while Kaler may not have overstated the role of the white political elites, I do believe that she gives the situation an overinflated sense of importance within the book that takes away from what is good about the book. In her effort to "prove" malevalence on the part of the government I think she downplays the importance of family planning and contraceptive use, which is surely not her viewpoint.

Additionally, as noted elsewhere in other reviews, there were several errors in reporting on interviews (String around the waist, public thing to see--bottom page 162 & bottom page 170, Granny gave medicine, but actually on the pill--top of page 172 & lower middle page 173). In scholarly work I think this takes away from the text in a tremendous way. If an author attributes a quote to two different people it may make you wonder what other errors he or she has made, and how careful of a record keeper the researcher is.

Overall I think this book provides valuable inside and a refreshing perspective around the politics of family planning in white-ruled Zimbabwe. This book would be an excellent read for scholars wishing to get a better perspective on both family planning as well as the unconventional ways in which African women have exerted control over situations in their lives.

By Camila Augusto Martins Alves
Signe no sólo narra un viaje a través de Rusia, pero también presenta una serie de reflexiones sobre relaciones, viajes, trabajo, entre otros temas. Es una historia muy interesante.
