Rome the Second Time: 15 Itineraries That Don't Go to the Coliseum, by Dianne Bennett, William Graebner

Designed for the tourist seeking a fresh, authentic, Roman experience, this intimate, stimulating guide explores Rome's splendid modern architecture, its bustling close-in neighborhoods, and its rivers, magnificent fountains, and aqueducts. Itineraries take the reader to Fascist and occupied Rome of World War II, the nearby Alban Hills, and the Eternal City's lesser-known green spaces. Innovative chapters feature cultural and artistic Rome, including art galleries, jazz clubs, film locations, and rooftop bars--even places that offer a sumptuous (and free) "vernissage" of wine and hors d'oeuvres. With Bill and Dianne as guides-their voices part of the experience-the curious traveler will discover a housing project built under Mussolini; ascend a little-known holy Roman road on the city's outskirts; spend an evening in the out-of-the-way, artsy neighborhood of Pigneto; enjoy a trattoria where only Italians eat; and, among the book's many informative, creative "sidebars," find in one the troubling story of Rome's Jewish community, and in another locate sites in "Angels & Demons." 16 maps, 70 photos, an index, and detailed directions and instructions (including websites) make this "new" Rome easily accessible. For the frugally-minded, at times adventurous (at times armchair) traveler. Foreword by Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni.

Review
"The fact that Walter Veltroni, the highly respected mayor of Rome until 2008 has written a foreword to this guidebook should inspire confidence in the Transitions Abroad reader eager to see the Rome behind the "Disneyland" itineraries, jammed with exhausted tourists that countless other guidebooks describe...The authors take the reader through a number of itineraries, carefully explained and annotated with excellent maps." --Transitions Abroad(www.transitionsabroad.com)

"This book is geared to the traveler who has already seen the big sights - the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, Vatican City and so on - and is ready to experience the less traveled, quirkier and definitely cheaper side of Rome. In other words, the Rome of ordinary people." --Chicago Tribune, June Sawyers

"...if you're planning on staying in Rome for a while, or if you're coming back, there's a good argument that ROME THE SECOND TIME is the second guidebook you should buy....If you're going to be in Rome for long enough, or regularly enough, to get past those first fevered days between the Colosseum and the Vatican, you may well want to dip into ROME THE SECOND TIME, and see what it has to offer. It's also supported by their Website, called, well, Rome The Second Time." --www.romefile.com

"Most guidebooks are outdated by the time they reach the stores, but this one is different. Beautifully written, with an enthusiasm for the Eternal City that warms every page, it takes readers far off the beaten path, into neighborhoods where tourists seldom tread." --www.inromenow.com

"This book gives you a new insight into Rome. Itineraries and directions are well-written with interesting sidebars and stories about the sights. I enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to using it next time I'm in Rome." --About.com, Martha Bakerjian (goitaly.com)

A Wonderul Way to Relive Roman Adventures
By Ronald M. Johnson
This was one of my very first Kindle books and did not disappoint. My expectation was that the Rome my wife and I had explored on different visits would come alive as I read. And that is exactly what happened. Armed with my old travel guides, and occasionally consulting Wiki entries on the old city, I was able to once again tramp through familiar sections of the city or spend time for the first time in locations that had eluded us on our trips. The Bennett/Graebner itineraries bring a special feel and voice to each site, a sense of being with old friends and enjoying sights in a new way. We would recommend this book to anyone who wants to go beyond the usual guidebooks and seek out unique neighborhoods, buildings, and natural settings that exist throughout Rome. Bennett and Graebner give the reader a much more complex and deeper meaning to the term "eternal city" as they take us on a journey through a city that few know as well as they do. Our goal now is to have the chance to follow their suggested tours in person and not just as an excellent read.

Rome the Second Time Is for First Timers Too
By M. Sargent
Rome The Second Time is designed for the return visitor who has seen the major tourist sights. Yet, it is also a perfect guide book for first timers like me who want to experience the city in a different and deeper way than is often possible in a brief stay. On my first trip to Rome I followed all or part of 6 itineraries included in the book (Rome and Its Aqueducts; Hitler and the Germans Come to Rome; On the Gionicolo; The Nazis and Fascists in Central Rome; The Architecture of Modernism and Fascism; An Evening in Pigneto). Thanks to Bennett and Graebner's excellent guide, I enjoyed every step and syllable.

The itineraries are detailed and easy to follow and took me to places I would never have found on my own. The sights selected introduce the
wayfarer to Rome's history, architecture, infrastructure, neighborhoods, politics and political movements, archaeology, ethnic and immigrant communities
high and popular art, night life, music scene, social classes, sports stadiums, schools and universities and much more. The commentaries describing the sights are lively and entertaining and explain succinctly the history and significance of what one is looking at. They tell us what to look for; what to see that we might miss otherwise.

Although I was not able to walk all 15 itineraries, the book guided me to an intense connection and bond with the city And reading it cover to cover on my return home helped me cope with feelings of Rome withdrawal and to anticipate and plan my second time. I highly recommend Rome the Second Time to first, second or tenth time visitors to Rome.

Lots of interesting facts about Rome
By Craig Serio
This book is peppered with interesting and fun facts about Rome and its recent and historical past. Some may find it a little heavy on the fascist regime info but if you plan on spending time venturing around some of the featured neighborhoods like the Jewish ghetto it can be a helpful reference guide. Most of the itineraries are good. May not be the best choice for the first time traveler to Rome but a good resource if you are going back and looking for little more variety to plan some personal walking tours.
