Soup and Me

I like the book I'm reading because it is kind of a comady. It is about two friends who have grown up together. Theres a girl in the book that always picks on them and they try to get back at her. They play tricks on her. Then Soup starts liking a girl and Rob doesn't like that with some times they fight. In one part of the book witch I thought was funny. They try to save money to buy some gum so Soup gives Rob a hair cut. With doesn't turn out to well. But I realy like this book.
The boys realy have some funny things happen to them. They decide to take a swim in April and of course the water is freezing. A girl comes and takes there clothes and throughs them into the pond.So they have to run through the town naked. They come to a church and they find some clothes but they are all girl clothes. They build this car from stuff they found at the dump. They have all different tips of tires. They take it for a test drive and they crash into the ditch. Rob's mom gives him a Quarter for a hair cut. But the wont to get some bubble gum. So Soup gives Rob a hair cut.

Harry Potter Who?

Peck's Soup series puts Harry Potter and anyone who reads them to shame, shame on you! The Soups are smart, funny and relevant to anyone who enjoys a quick read.
It's a shame Soup & Me and the other Soups are out of print. These books will remind you of Huck Finn; they're about clever, rural boys with cool names and the writing's just as good, but funnier.
I recommend the Soups to everybody, including Rosie O'Donnell and my nay-saying girlfriend. Most of all, I wish all pre-teen boys could read the Soups -- to actually read something that can be considered fine writing, and to learn how to construct a corn cob pipe in a Vermont corn field.

Loved it as a kid, love it now as an adult

I loved the Soup books when I was a kid. They are funny, easy to read and great to listen to. I found a used paperback last year and reread it. Sometimes books don't really hold up as I look at them again with older eyes, but this one sure does!

why on earth is this no longer in print?!

Madonna Like You've Never Seen Her Before

Now out-of-print, Madonna's "Sex," book was one of the 1990's greatest hypes due to its' graphic depiction of sex. Where else can you see Madonna strutting down Miami Beach with Vanilla Ice naked, or see her making out with such celebrities as Isabella Rossellini and Naomi Campbell?
The book, which was bounded in an orginal format involving two sheets of metal, each numbered, and sealed in a Mylar plastic sleeve is genius. Although it is a book that is highly likely to cause airport security to open your bags, Madonna must have had a reason to do something so creative, yet so risque.
Truly, "Sex" remains a classic due to its main goal of reopening the sexual revolution in the evangelicalism the 1990's brought. Homosexuality, lesbianism, and fetishes were all somewhat taboos to be discussed or shown in public, however nowadays attitudes have changed. In some ways, Madonna was a pioneer, and as so, she deserves credit for being the most outrageous, daring woman of the 20th century.

Fascinating Failure

When this book came out in 1992, I was surprised how stark the book was and what a dark tone it took on. This was not a fun, erotic book but a rather somber look at sex and relationships. Back then I was turned off and thought Madonna had made a mistake. By all accoounts, it probably was as Madonna's image suffered and her status as 'pioneer' came to an end. It just wasn't as cool to like Madonna anymore. From 1992 to 1995, Madonna could no right in the public's mind, and although songs like 'Secret' and 'Take a Bow' were major hits and proved Madonna was still a musical force to be reckoned with, 'Sex' was the turning point in Madonna's career as cultural icon.

Now 12 years later, 'Sex' actually does carry some merit. It's still amateurish, particularly the packaging (what were they thinking with the binding??) and some of the phots (ie. with the skinhead lesbians and Naomi Campbell, Big Daddy Kane and Vanilla Ice) are pointless and silly, but some of the text is quite sexy, and Madonna explores some provocative themes such as S/M, power dynamics in relationships and bisexuality and homosexuality that are both sexy, insightful and funny.

I think Camille Paglia said it best in her 1992 review in 'Us' Magazine that the best photos in the book were the ones of Madonna on her own. I agree. The pictures of Madonna playing sexy housewife, hitchhiking nude, hand gliding nude and eating pizza in the nude are both voyeuristic and exciting, as Madonna plays out these roles with the sense of humor and fun that we've come to expect. The rest of the book is quite dark and yet you have to admire Madonna for showing the negative side of sex rather than just flashing her body for a quick buck. She actually makes an attempt to be intellectual about sex and pornography.

'Sex' is interesting reading and viewing. It is a fascinating failure. I think Madonna should have gone the route of playing characters rather than interacting with others and she should have concentrated more on the text. She could have also used a more original title.

As for the Christian reviewer who says that Madonna 'regrets' the book. I don't remember Madonna saying she regrets it but she wishes she had presented it in a different way. Deep down, I think she regrets it from a career standpoint but she should be proud of the things that she presented in this book. Her comments at the beginning of the book where she distinguishes fantasies from the dangers of AIDS are pointed and she also poignantly remarks that there is nothing better than sex with love.

In this book, it's almost like Madonna is searching for that love, and this book admirably points out the loneliness and unfulfillment that even sex brings.

Who would have thought that putting the most famous woman in the world together with one of the top photographers in the country would bring forth a phenomenal, gratifying, "sexsational" picture book. Madonna plays various roles as she is dominating, being dominated and just having a ball with exploring the world of fantasy and pleasure. In this book Madonna brings forward all types of fantasies that the general public would rather put under the rug and not talk about. That's the key to Madonna's success with this book. Madonna wants you to see what goes on and what exists, she's not afraid and rises above. Madonna puts herself in vulnerable and steamy situations as part of her fantasy. The letters she writes as the narrator of the book, "Dita Parlow" are eye-catching and satisfying. Madonna falls into the character and delivers a sensational literary work. The CD is also very erotic and sex-drenched to go along with the theme

A Rollicking Recounting of a World Gone Mad

This is a book for people who believe books about entertainment should be entertaining. It is not for those intent on calculating (to the second decimal) what percentage of a given Beatles' song was written by Paul, and how much by John, a scholastic debate that seems to be in vogue currently. Ivor Davis 'extensively researched account of the Beatles first US tour (and he was there), while chock full of interesting information, is much more an account of Beatlemania than a treatise on Beatle-ism. It not only tells you a lot about the Beatles, it takes you back to that initial era of maximum excitement, letting the reader try to figure out what all the shrieking was about - and maybe even relive a little of it.
Davis uses the story of the opening tour that took the Beatles from the Cow Palace in San Francisco to the Paramount Theater in New York - with big loops in between through Canada and down to New Orleans and Jacksonville - as a matrix to tell pretty much the whole story of the Beatles. For instance, Beatles manager Brian Epstein's dependence on prescription drugs, his sensitivity about his homosexuality, and his ambivalence about his Jewishness are all in evidence in episodes from the tour, and these are depicted well by Davis in his straight ahead, take-no-prisoners, call 'em as you saw 'em journalistic style. Epstein, for instance, asked Davis to arrange a ticket for him to Yom Kippur services in New Orleans. Davis did so, but then Epstein failed to show. Then Davis, in the book, delves deeply into his own library of over 300 books on the Beatles plus other sources, to fill in the rest of the story of Epstein's downward spiral to suicide.
Not that there's any shortage of interesting little factoids from the Beatles early days in the US. This reader, for instance, didn't know Ed Sullivan had never heard the Beatles sing before they performed on his show. (He had however, heard the shrieking of a mob of teenage girls who were welcoming the Beatles at Heathrow Airport, and that was apparently good enough for him.) Nor did I know (though many more serious fans probably do) that Capitol Records didn't even release the first Beatles record it had the rights to because an executive didn't think the Beatles had what it took to sell records in America. Indeed, one of the interesting aspects of the book is the fact that no one at the time really understood that the Beatles were to become legends in their own time. John Lennon thought their period of popularity might last four years. Ringo Starr was planning to open a hair dressing shop when fame faded. Davis, then a brash young ex-pat British journalist in his mid-20s who had more or less talked his way into a job as the bureau chief of the London Daily Express' (one-man) "West Coast Bureau," admits he had no idea what lay ahead for the Beatles. (Davis himself has an interesting story to tell in the epilogue. He left his job as a PR guy for a chain of lower-priced vacation resorts in England - having decided to become a Hollywood reporter - and arrived in the US with a suitcase and $100. He knew very little about the Beatles when he was assigned to join their entourage as a permanent traveling member.)
Sorting out what the Beatles' appeal was (and remains) is as challenging for Davis as it has been down through the years to other chroniclers. To many back then it just seemed like refried American rock `n' roll. However, Davis makes it very clear that it was NOT the music they played in the stadiums and arenas on the tour that set the world afire -- because no one could hear it. Not only was the shrieking of the teenage virgins earsplitting from start to finish - drowning out most of the music - but the sound systems in the venues were uniformly horrid, something the Beatles constantly complained about. They couldn't even hear themselves. Ringo Starr, on at least one occasion, had to lip read the singers to figure out which song they were playing.
He really should have known. The Beatles played the same 12-song, 27-minute set at every concert, always concluding with ¨Long, Tall Sally," at which point Davis and the other members of the traveling party would leave their front row seats, slog through the gooey detritus of melting jelly beans flung by the bushel at the musicians during the concert, in an effort to get out ahead of the stampede. The Beatles themselves often made their escape in an ambulance, siren shrieking, lights flashing. One of the Beatles finally puts the beam of an insight on all that is happening: The fans didn't come to hear them sing; they came just to see them. It was more of a pilgrimage than a cultural experience. Its meaning more than snappy melodies or catchy lyrics. A joyous release, perhaps, from the tragedy of the contemporaneous Kennedy assassination.
Davis also displays a real gift as an anecdotist. One of my favorites is an exchange between an actor and Zsa Zsa Gabor at a Hollywood celebrity party. The actor asked Zsa Zsa if the Beatles were going to sing. ¨Do they sing?" Zsa Zsa asked, her grip on events on popular culture apparently slipping badly. And Davis doesn't skimp on the sex and drugs and booze, and believes he has added some clarification to previous accounts of how Bob Dylan introduced the Britishers to marijuana (subsequently a staple of their medication diet). But he doesn't dwell on the seamier episodes. For example, he tells about the mother who was paid $10,000 to keep her mouth shut about the (consensual, not to say eager) attendance of her daughters at a party in the Beatles Las Vegas suite, but doesn't get into what exactly the sisters were up to at the party. He alludes to the goings-on indirectly, in more well told anecdotes. On one memorable "morning after," for instance, Davis asked Ringo why he looked so melancholy and glum. The drummer, grimacing visibly, explained in clear, earthy language that it's because of the acute soreness of his sexual member.
All in all, "The Beatles and Me On Tour" is a rollicking recounting of a world gone mad - all except for a small island of intermittent quasi-sanity that existed from time to time on the floor of hotels occupied by the Beatles and their traveling party -- including Ivor Davis.

If you love The Beatles, the Sixties, and great writing, this new book is a must read! Seriously, you feel like a fly on the wall, as if you were there back in 1964. If you're unfamiliar with Ivor Davis -- he hung out, traveled with and got to know The Beatles in 1964. If you're unfamiliar with Ivor, he was a foreign correspondent, a New York Times columnist, editor at large for LA Magazine and more, and he's covered everything from Civil Rights in Mississippi, the Robert Kennedy assassination, Angela Davis and Daniel Ellsburg to the Sharon Tate murders, Patty Hearst and even the World Soccer Cups. Enjoy the read, I know you will. And when you're done, you'll want to read his other books, too. I promise.

Great summer read about one summer 50 years ago.

I lived this too, but on a much lower level as the Yeah Beatles Fan Club President from San Diego. Ivor captures what life was like inside the tornado that was The Beatles that summer. Well written, interesting insights to each Beatle. If you were young in 1964, the Beatles were it and Ivor delivers the stories we all wanted to be part of back then.

Needs more images!

While it is illustrated, it needs about six times more pictures than it has. The concept of masks is best communicated visually and in color.
The Kindle format permits this to a much greater degree than a printed book: Ms. Bell has not taken as much advantage of this as she could.

You may also enjoy "Masks" by W.T. Benda (1944, 1945), though it is out of print and somewhat rare and expensive. I was surprised Ms. Bell made no mention of Benda in her work.

I may have more to say in the future.

I am med-peds trained, practicing hospital and emergency medicine for both adults and kids. I have also practiced primary care. This book has pros and cons:

Pros:

Compact

Ringed binder allows you to leave out pages you don't need or add others to it (if you see adults and kids, you can put MGH's Pocket Medicine book along with these pages in one binder).

Contains some very good info in table and outline format

Cons:

Index is not very helpful (lists every page that mentions a topic even in passing, without letting the reader know which pages are devoted to the topic).

Missing important info (two examples: next to nothing for AAP neonatal jaundice guidelines, just refers you to the seminal Bhutani paper; a similar lack of info on indications for antibiotics in neonates...these are common, important clinical situations)

The best pocket-sized resource

Much like the pocket medicine book we all love, this book contains all of the high-yield, easily-readable information you need to know to take care of your patients as a House Officer. While I have piles of medical books collecting dust, this is one of the four books I ACTUALLY use and one of the two books I keep in my pocket. It's weak in neonatology, but it makes up for it in PICU material. If it only had a few pages dedicated to medication dosing, I'd be leaving my Harriet at home. If I had to pick one book to carry with me, this would be it.

Exactly like pocket medicine for pediatrics. I survived med school rotations with pocket medicine and am now doing the same as a peds resident with this new version. Great review and references on every topic. The most comprehensive and condensed book you can carry around. I would take it over my harriet lane any day.

Too repetitive, okay as a starter in marketing psychology

It's really repetitive.

The formula for each lesson is usually theory + anecdote. It ends off making the book seem shallow, as if it's trying to get each lesson over with. Often times, Dooley references the same examples (especially the wine example), which also makes the book feel rushed.

For all of my negative talk, some examples are actually great. The section on selling to cheap(er) people was golden. The steps were:
1. Make the price a bargain.
2. Avoid repeated pain points. (AKA don't make them pay multiple times for every little thing)
3. Create product bundles. (one easy price)
4. Appeal to important needs.
5. Offer instant gratification. (to satisfy their wants)

Overall, I think that Dooley tackles way too many things in this book, when he could've approached
