A FAMED PSYCHOANALYST AND FEMINIST ARGUES FOR WOMEN’S LIBERATION “FIRST”

Juliet Mitchell (born 1940) is a British psychoanalyst and socialist feminist, who taught English literature from 1962 to 1970 at Leeds University and Reading University. She Professor of Psychoanalysis and Gender Studies at Cambridge University, before in 2010 being appointed Director of the Expanded Doctoral School in Psychoanalytic Studies at Psychoanalysis Unit of University College London. She has written/edited other books such as Psychoanalysis And Feminism: A Radical Reassessment Of Freudian Psychoanalysis, Feminine Sexuality: Jacques Lacan and the école freudienne, Selected Melanie Klein, etc.

She wrote in the Preface to this 1971 book, “women are an oppressed people, we can learn about this oppression by using the ‘politics of experience,’ we can combat oppression by attacking the agents and institutions of power… to produce either ‘equality’ or the ‘liberated self’: ‘whole people.’ We have… to discuss the specific features of woman’s situation that most clearly locate her oppression… The family and the psychology of femininity are clearly crucial here… it is within the development of her feminine psyche and her ideological and socio-economic role as mother and housekeeper that woman finds the oppression that is hers alone. As this defines her, so any movement for her liberation must analyze and change this position.” (Pg. 14)

She says in the first chapter, “the ‘middle class’ composition of Women’s Liberation is not an unhappy fact… but an intrinsic fact of feminist awareness. The most economically and socially underprivileged woman is bound much tighter to her condition by a consensus which passes it off as ‘natural.’… a college-educated girl spending her time studying ‘home economics’ for an academic degree is at least in a position to ask ‘why?” (Pg. 22)

She asserts, “The ideological dimensions of the revolution are likely to come initially from within the ideologically dominant class. Clearly nothing will be achieved within this sphere alone… In a consumer society the role of ideology is so important that it is within the sphere of ideology that the oppressions of the whole system sometimes manifest themselves most apparently. It is here that middle-class radicalism has its place. This should not mislead us into thinking that attacking the institutions and agents of the superstructure is a middle-class occupation and that, say, students must just ally with workers who will bring in the economic struggle… the role of OPPRESSED groups, that is those groups which experience their oppression as much culturally as economically, is increasingly important. Women are an oppressed half of the population.” (Pg. 34-35)

She explains, “for most of this book I have used the term ‘feminist’ and ‘liberationist’ interchangeably and refer to the whole movement as the Women’s Liberation Movement. Briefly, liberationists see the oppression of women as one … of the many oppressions experienced by different people in pre-socialist societies; radical feminists contend it is the major and primary one in all societies.” (Pg. 51)

She clarifies, “The separatist politics of Women’s Liberation may have come out of one of the chief manifestations of women’s oppression.: their diffidence… Women’s Liberation both counteracts the oppressed behavior of women in our society … and provides a political base for the analysis of this oppression. Such a separatist movement in no way excludes the awareness of other oppressed groups under capitalism, nor does it pretend that the society does not harm men, too. The movement is largely anti-capitalist…” (Pg. 58)

She points out, “Women’s Liberation is crucially concerned with that area of politics which is experienced as personal. Women… find that what they thought was an individual dilemma is a social predicament and hence a political problem… In this way a personal incident that was condemned to the oblivion of privacy is examined as a manifestation of the oppressed conditions women experience: the personal is seen to be a crucial aspect of the political.” (Pg. 61)

She argues, “Feminism unites women at the level of their total oppression---it is all-inclusive… Its politics match this: it is a total attack. The theory backs this: the first division of labor was the first formation of oppressor and oppressed---the first division of labor was between man and woman. The first domination must be given priority---it must be the first to go.” (Pg. 87)

She admits, “The oppressed consciousness of all groups contributes to the nature of this socialist ideology---if any oppressed awareness is missing from its formation that is its loss. Feminist consciousness has been inadequately represented in the formation of socialist ideology, as the oppression of women has, so far, been inadequately combatted in socialist revolutions.” (Pg. 96)

She suggests, “the attempt to focus women’s existence exclusively on bringing up children, is manifestly harmful to children as well… Exclusive maternity is often… ‘counter-productive.’ The mother discharges her own frustrations and anxieties in a fixation on a child. An increased awareness of the critical importance of socialization, far from leading to a restitution of classical maternal roles, should lead to a reconsideration of them---of what makes a good socializing agent who can genuinely provide security and stability for the child.” (Pg. 146)

She concludes, “In the home the social function and the psychic identity of women as a group is found. Class differences at work… are here obliterated for status differences: ‘wealthy,’ ‘middling,’ ‘poor.’ This is not to underestimate these. But the position of women as women takes precedence; oppressed whatever their particular circumstances. Hence the importance of feminist consciousness in any revolution… Hence Women’s Liberation.” (Pg. 182)

Wonderfully robust research, muddled support for thesis

In a brief but lucid introduction to her monograph, Lyndal Roper states her argument plainly for the reader. The last sentence of the section reads, "The conservative rewriting of the Reformation movement's message around a politics of women's role in marriage and household was the key to its successful implementation and establishment." Roper's thesis is that evangelical Protestant doctrine conquered Augsburg not because it offered radical social change, but rather because it became a spiritual buttress for traditional gender roles in marriage. This is a departure from the more conventional view of the Reformation, when it was portrayed a more liberating social order for the average woman, at least when compared to the traditional Christianity practiced prior to the sixteenth century. The Holy Household has a straight-forward structure; Roper devotes chapters to analysis of sin, prostitution, wedding rites, expectations of marital relations, and the treatment of Catholic nuns. Roper's analysis of daily life in Augsburg, from the early sixteenth century to about 1550 (the period of the Catholic restoration), is certainly masterful.

A staggering list of works cited, both printed and unprinted sources, takes up over twenty pages of the book. The majority of footnotes for particular arguments refer the reader to the mass of primary local and municipal archives Roper sifted through to find support for her thesis. When secondary works are cited, the footnote is usually a brief aside about parallel works, potential counter-arguments, or points of dissension between Roper's case and the traditional study of the Reformation. By making such obvious use of primary sources, Roper lends a great amount of credibility to her research, and at a few points in the book even delves into literary analysis of the use of certain German words during the period. For instance, there is a discussion of the various terms used by the Augsburg Council to describe sin and discipline to citizens. This meticulous investigation into period archives provides an accessible portrait of life in Reformation Augsburg and proves Roper's ability as a researcher.

However, does this scholarship prove Roper's thesis? Ultimately, her argument puts the cart before the horse. Copious examples throughout the book illustrate that gender roles and marriage relations became increasingly calcified throughout the period due to the policies of the Protestant government of Augsburg. They founded these beliefs on Biblical tenets, but also on cultural mores extant at the time. The Protestant Reformation hardly liberated women from habitual gender roles and in fact became more patriarchal and sexually repressive as it advanced. This much Roper exhaustively proves. Ignored are other attributes of early modern Augsburg that found vindication in the Reformation, which may do more to explain the movement's success than the power offered to men over women. For example, the erasure of Catholic stigma attached to commerce and trade surely appealed to the predominately artisan city. While Roper articulates the sexual deviancy associated with Catholic clergy, and particularly emphasizes the (real or imagined) connection of women's sexual misbehavior with priests, she ignores other jealousies the laity harbored towards their clerics. Privileges of treatment under the law, taxation, and other perquisites rankled with potential Protestants. All of these were contributing factors to the dominance and domestication of the Reformation. While the benefits to be enjoyed from using the movement to solidify male power and strengthen traditional patriarchal authority were certainly enticing, they could not have been the only reasons for the whole-hearted success of the Protestant reforms in Augsburg.

Poor thesis detracts from this otherwise fine work.

University of Oxford professor, Dr. Lyndal Roper, paints a contrarian view of the Protestant Reformation in her work The Holy Household: Women and Morals in Reformation Augsburg. In it, she suggests that far from being the "priesthood of all believers" that early Reformers idealized and sold as a liberation movement, the Protestant Reformation actually worsened conditions for the female half of the population. She argues this point on many social fronts of 16th century Augsburg: in marriage, sexuality, the practice of prostitution and the elimination of convents. While Roper's case clearly holds in regard to nuns, who lost all freedom to operate their convents and the status that came with being a "bride of Christ" under the Catholic regime, the rest of her argument is not as strong. In terms of the financially dependent condition women were confined to under both Protestantism and Catholicism, where the average woman's security was tied to either her marital status or the wealth of her male relatives, women fared better under Protestant encouragement of strong marriage and, according to Roper's own findings, enjoyed greater legal protections in terms of stabilization of marriage, verdicts in their favor through the Marriage Court, and finally through the abolition of brothels that really served to weaken existing marriages and exploit women rather than provide them financial opportunity.

Although the thesis is weak, Roper does an admirable job bringing post-Reformation Augsburg to life.

Clever Movie Reviews From A Clever Rock Critic

This fat new anthology of Kurt Loder's film criticism is a good companion to Roger Ebert's work. In the introduction Loder brings up Pauline Kael in a self-deprecating way. But I think Loder has a common-sense approach that eludes Kael. In fact, in a break from showbiz orthodoxy, Loder is now reviewing movies for the libertarian magazine "Reason". His landmark pan of Michael Moore's "Sicko" is included in this volume. And he is gratifyingly smart about pretension of all kinds. Loder also covers documentaries and foreign films. Attention to these has decreased in the past 20 years or so. Loder is doing his part to revive interest in them. It's too bad that these reviews only go back to 2004. I would like to read Loder on older films. Or a memoir about his long career would be a nice chunk of American cultural history. If you are a fan of clear, elegant prose and provocative thinking you will greatly enjoy this book.

Kurt Doesn't Waste Words

Kurt Loder considers himself a "film reviewer" as opposed to a "film critic". Essentially that means that he chooses to review " meat and potatoes" movies instead of focusing only on esoteric films. He is a filter for the common moviegoer. He's also totally unpretentious, cheerful, tidy and slightly astringent. His reviews are neat little bundles with a witty parting line at the end--which means that if you want a quick take on his opinion, you can just fastforward to the concluding sentence.

This volume covers some two hundred odd titles from the first decade of the new century. Loder's categorizations of the movies emphasize the rather crass way that movies are marketed to target audiences. I found that I had actually viewed less than 15% of these movies, most of which had no brush whatsoever with the Academy Awards. But as I said, Loder is not an esoteric reviewer, and he gives space to all the types of movies (low and high art both) flowing through the cultural river. Read in their entirety, books like this tend to confirm the idea that we are indeed amusing ourselves to death.

One of Loder's greatest gifts is that he can reduce and make legible even the loopiest, most convoluted plots in movies, and dog knows we are now regularly subjected to movie plots that are infuriatingly obtuse. Kurt spins his spidery analytical silk and salts them away all the same, in a fastidious packet that is low on verbiage. He has a good grasp of the mechanics of the movie industry, and he can quickly diagnose just why a film succeeds or fails.

Loder reviews for "Reason" magazine, and perhaps that is why his reviews are so panoptical, as deadpan analyses of what people really watch. In addition to his familiarity with all the niches and the low appetites that collar even the most high-minded, he is cognizant of films that are increasingly worthy of attention, such as the wealth of good documentaries that are being produced.

Still, if he ever releases another book of reviews, I hope that it will be called "Kurt's Essentials". Then, his humble readers won't spend so much time wondering why these films (the bad and 'godawful' ones) were even made.

Like any collection of reviews, there are hits and misses. It is entertaining to read, though. I enjoyed it. My computer says I need to add one more word, so I add the word "codswallop."

J Bartell was an instructor, lecturer and chief of staff of a large California-based therapy institute whose clients included people from all walks of life. But it was his worldwide travels on behalf of affluent clients, including heads-of-state, that put him on the radar of the CIA. What started out as simple courier work eventually lead to Bartell becoming part of a small group that handled off-book assignments, meaning no record, so there’s “plausible deniability”.

The group, consisted of Bartell, his CIA handler Chauncey Holt and former U.S. Marine, Michael Harries, best known for having created the famous Harries Flashlight Technique used by law enforcement around the world for handling arms in low-light conditions. Additional support to the group came from master gunsmith Jim Boland and Jeff Cooper, who is considered to be the father of modern combat shooting and tactics.

The significance of the book’s title is that once J Bartell became truly engaged in black ops, his handler Chauncey Holt welcomed him into “The 231 Club” — 231 being the name of the gun powder for their weapon of choice, the 45 caliber Colt 191. This group, and others, was an extension of the CIA’s black ops division referred to as Executive Action which was created in the 1950s.

As a result of Bartell’s increased involvement, he experienced everything from weapons deals and covert training missions to helping ruthless killers, hiding behind positions of power, get their due.

A Story Worth Telling

It is rare for me to start a book and read the whole story in one sitting, but I could not put this one down. I was so amazed that a licensed psychotherapist and hypnotherapist, who was so successful at helping people, became a sanctioned assassin, that I purchased a book for myself and a 2nd one for loan. This memoir is a fascinating and probably a very honest account of the author's experiences and how they altered his entire life. I rate this book a 5+++++. It is not only a very action filled story, but it made me look at the fact that the choices that we make in our lives affect our very souls.

Gem of a Page-turner

The "231 Club" is an almost unbelievable story...how could this stuff be true? But, it is a great example of how truth really can be stranger than fiction. The author describes activities and scenes from his past as a CIA black operations contractor; and these stories will make your head shake and your stomach curl. His style is direct, first person and clear as a bell; he was instructed to "take out" these people by the US government in the crazy cold war days, and his team did just that in various countries and in various ways.

On the less serious side, the book is rich in terms of discussion regarding the personal weaponry contract killers used at that time, and any gun/weapon hobbyist might want to read this book for just that alone. Apparently, the members of the 231 Club hit squad spent a lot of time fashioning, tinkering with and range firing their arsenal (as I suppose hit squads might tend to do). The author even puts forth a plausible weapon theory about the Kennedy assassination - one that I had never heard but makes a lot of sense.
All in all, this book is an effortless read and a real gem of a page-turner. If you want a view from a real "spy with a license to kill" then stop watching Bond films and have a read...it will surprise you.

Makes you think!

The 231 Club is well written and I certainly appreciated the author’s voice and the casual style. It also made me think what I would have done if I were in his shoes. Take the safe road and stay in my day job of therapist or take the one going left to the big unknown with plenty of risks along the way?

Fortunately I was in my armchair enjoying the dilemma. All in all, the book is very interesting, both in the author’s background as well as in the various stories he tells of life in the fast lane. The author’s adventures make for very good reading especially when you know they are true tales of CIA exploits. What may have started as high level thinking about the jobs that needed to be done in South America or Latin America during this time period was soon relegated to the people who actually had to carry them out and they often did so with very little resources or help from the upper level “suits”.
